MAN trucks engine

We covered extensive topics on how best to evaluate and find information about MAN trucks.

MAN trucks engine

MAN trucks are renowned for their longevity, productivity, efficiency, and, not least, their powerful and reliable engines. The broad range of MAN engines allows meeting diverse transportation needs, offering different configurations and power parameters.

All MAN trucks are equipped with Common Rail fuel injection technology, where fuels are pressurized to a high level of 2,500 bars and stored in a common reservoir, supplying all cylinders. The pressurised fuels are distributed to individual injectors through high-pressure lines controlled electronically, ensuring precise and flexible fuel delivery. This ensures more efficient, consistent, and quieter engine operation, lower emissions, and reduced fuel consumption.

MAN truck engines are designed to use fuel in the most economical way possible. Applied combustion technologies, turbocharging, and engine management innovations allow minimizing fuel consumption, thus reducing overall operating costs. Turbocharging technology improves engine performance, especially at lower rev frequencies, where torque is crucial for heavy-duty tasks.

Advanced engine management systems

Another measure enhancing fuel efficiency is the electronic engine management systems. These systems enable continuous monitoring and adjustment of engine parameters to ensure optimal performance and fuel efficiency. Additionally, they provide diagnostics and real-time data, ensuring timely technical maintenance and issue resolution.

Modern truck engines are inconceivable without strict adherence to environmental standards. To meet these standards, MAN engines use advanced exhaust gas after-treatment systems. These systems consist of components such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), which reduce the levels of harmful pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. For those aiming for even greater sustainability, MAN offers alternative fuels, such as compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas engines, which contribute further to environmental conservation.

The most commonly used engines for trucks are from the D26 (Image 1) and D38 (Image 2) diesel engine series, well-suited for long-haul transport due to their high power and torque parameters.

The D26 series engines are known for their exceptional power and torque (+10 HP, +50 Nm in each power category), up to 3.3% lower fuel consumption, and excellent environmental performance due to an efficient two-stage exhaust gas recirculation system. The D26 series includes engines such as D2676 and D2677, with power ranging from approximately 440 to 540 horsepower.

The D38 engine series is designed to ensure exceptionally high power and operational efficiency. These engines are ideal for heavy-duty and specialized vehicles where high torque and power are essential. They stand out with high pulling force, low fuel consumption, and feature a two-stage turbocharger with intercooling function to optimally supply combustion air. The D38 series includes engines such as the D3876, boasting a power output of up to 640 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful engines in the MAN lineup.
