    Mercedes Benz trucks engines

    Mercedes Benz truck engines

We covered extensive topics on how best to evaluate and find information about Mercedes Benz Actros trucks.

    Mercedes Benz Actros engine types

All engines used in Mercedes Benz Actros are Euro VI compliant and are designed for long-distance and heavy-duty transport. The Actros trucks feature six-cylinder engines that employ common rail direct fuel injection technology. These engines boast a power output of up to 460 kW and a maximum torque of 3,000 Nm.

Regarding the engine displacement, the Mercedes Benz Actros trucks offer three engine types: OM470, OM471, and OM473 – each differing in power output – the higher the number in the engine name, the higher the displacement and the higher the power output available.

The OM470 engine possesses a displacement of 10.7 litres, delivering a power output ranging from 240 kW to 335 kW, along with a maximum torque of 1,800 Nm.

With a displacement of 12.8 litres, the OM471 engine provides a power output ranging from 310 kW to 390 kW and a maximum torque of 2,600 Nm.

The OM473 engine features the largest displacement of 15.6 litres and is the most powerful option, offering outputs ranging from 380 kW to 460 kW. It has a maximum torque of 3000 Nm.

In addition to advanced fuel injection systems that enhance fuel economy, reduce emissions, and optimise engine performance, Mercedes Benz Actros engines stand out due to their high power, advanced control systems, reliability, durability, utilisation of innovative technologies, and integration with other vehicle systems. These features contribute to smoother and safer overall vehicle operation.

More about Mercedes Benz Actros engines

It’s no surprise to state that Mercedes Benz is renowned for its powerful, efficient, and environmentally compliant engines. In the truck category, Mercedes Benz Actros models feature six-cylinder engines with common rail direct injection technology, where fuel is pressurised to a high level of 2,000 bar or 29,000 psi and stored in a common rail from where it is supplied to all cylinders. The pressurised fuels are distributed to individual injectors through high-pressure lines controlled electronically, ensuring precise and flexible fuel delivery. This ensures more efficient, consistent, and quieter engine operation, lower emissions, and reduced fuel consumption.

The three main Actros engine variants are OM470, OM471, and OM473. These engines are designed to meet various operational requirements and emission standards, making them suitable for various truck tasks from regional transport to heavy-duty international cargo transport.

The OM470 engine is a 10.7-liter displacement six-cylinder diesel engine, ensuring a balance of power and efficiency. It is available in various power options ranging from 240 kW to 335 kW. In addition to the mentioned common rail system, the engine incorporates advanced technologies such as variable geometry turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, optimizing combustion and reducing emissions. The OM470 is well-suited for regional and long-distance journeys, ensuring sufficient torque for highway driving and steep inclines.

The OM471 engine is a more powerful variant designed for complex transportation tasks like long-haul heavy cargo transport. This 12.8-liter displacement six-cylinder diesel engine offers power ranging from 310 kW to 390 kW. Featuring advanced technologies like the X-Pulse fuel injection system, the OM471 engine ensures precise fuel injection and combustion efficiency, leading to improved operational characteristics and reduced emissions. Due to its larger displacement and higher power, the OM471 engine is ideal for challenging road conditions and tasks demanding high performance.

The OM473 engine is the top-tier engine in the Actros series, known for its superior power and performance metrics. This 15.6-liter displacement six-cylinder diesel engine is tailored for complex tasks involving large-scale cargo transport where power demands are exceptionally high. The OM473 engine’s power ranges from 380 kW to 460 kW, making it well-suited for handling heavy loads, steep inclines, and other challenging driving conditions. Like other engines in the series, the OM473 uses advanced technologies such as multi-stage turbocharging, optimised combustion and exhaust gas cleaning systems to deliver outstanding performance and the necessary emissions compliance.

While these three engines differ in power, construction, and technology, they share common features that ensure engine longevity and reliability – robust construction materials, precise engineering, and comprehensive production quality control. Additionally, they are designed for easy maintenance, facilitated by easily accessible engine components and advanced diagnostic systems for quick issue identification.

An integral goal of the overarching Mercedes-Benz vision is the reduction of its products environmental impact. Therefore, these engines place significant emphasis on environmental considerations. They are equipped with state-of-the-art emission control systems, including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filters (DPF), which reduce harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. This compliance aligns with global emission standards and underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Hence, it can confidently be stated that regardless of the transportation tasks – be it regional, long-haul, or heavy-duty cargo transport – you can fully trust the Mercedes-Benz Actros engines, where high power, efficiency, and lower emissions seamlessly coexist.
