Volvo trucks dimensions

We covered extensive topics on how best to evaluate and find information about Volvo FH trucks.

Volvo trucks dimensions

Volvo FH trucks are renowned for their versatility, efficiency, and adaptation to various transportation needs. Naturally, the dimensions of trucks play a significant role in determining their suitability for various purposes. Volvo FH offers different models, including FH, FH16, FH LNG, and FH Classic. Each of these models differs in dimensions and features to meet diverse market demands.
When discussing the dimensions of Volvo FH trucks, it is essential to first review the cabin dimensions. The cabins and their dimensions can be classified based on their purpose. The Globetrotter XXL cabin, as the name suggests, ensures ample space and comfort for the driver (Fig. 1). Due to the longer cabin, it is even more comfortable to sleep in a wider and longer lower bunk.

A slightly smaller cabin, the Globetrotter XL (CAB-XHSL), is designed to provide convenience for storing items. It safely and comfortably accommodates no more than two individuals, and the additional height allows for more space to store belongings. The internal height of the cabin is 220 cm (height above the engine compartment cover – 211 cm).

For those seeking a smaller cabin, the Globetrotter (CAB-HSLP, image 3) is a suitable choice. Its size allows for comfortable accommodation for two persons, and its vertical construction ensures plenty of additional space for storing items. The internal height of the cabin is 205 cm (height above the engine compartment cover – 196 cm).

Even lower and more compact cabin is the Sleeper (image 4), with an internal height of 171 cm and a height above the engine compartment cover of 162 cm (CAB-SLP). One can choose a cabin with a lowered roof (CAB-LSLP) and suspension to allow more space for the cargo (image 5). The interior height of these cabins is 147 cm, while above the engine compartment cover, it is 138 cm.

The height of the cabin above the ground depends on the wheel configuration and chassis height. The possible options are presented in the table below.

The height of truck suspensions can also vary, ranging from very low (X-Low) to extremely high (X-High). Precise suspension heights are provided in the table:
The dimensions of trucks are also determined by the so-called wheelbase – the distance between the front and rear axles. A longer wheelbase ensures smoother driving and greater stability, while a shorter one improves maneuverability.
The choice of wheelbase is very important as it affects the truck’s turning radius and its ability to move in confined spaces. This makes it a crucial factor for both urban and long-haul operations.
When choosing a truck, its overall height and width are very important, as they significantly impact aerodynamics, stability, and overall positioning on the road. These dimensions are determined by the selected cab design, chassis configuration, and additional features, such as roof spoilers.
When it comes to height, it is especially important for those planning to drive in low-clearance areas, such as under bridges and through tunnels. Width, on the other hand, affects maneuverability and compliance with traffic regulations.

Another factor to consider when choosing a truck’s configuration and dimensions is the turning radius, which determines maneuverability. A smaller turning radius allows for more agile and efficient movement, which is especially important in cities and on narrower roads. The turning radius is primarily influenced by the length of the wheelbase and steering characteristics, making it essential to thoroughly study the truck’s specifications.

Also, keep in mind that the selected accessories, such as roof spoilers, side skirts, and other external aerodynamic enhancements, will alter the overall dimensions of the truck. Therefore, it is essential to take these into account.

The dimensions of “Volvo FH” trucks depend on the cab length, superstructure specifications, wheelbase, and chassis configuration. These factors should be considered based on the specific operational requirements, ranging from regional distribution in cities to long-haul transportation on highways.

Optimizing Efficiency and Savings with the Volvo I-Shift System

Another system that significantly contributes to fuel savings is the I-Shift, designed specifically for efficient highway driving. When the economic mode is activated, gear shifts occur precisely when needed, ensuring the engine operates within its most fuel-efficient RPM range. The I-Shift and I-Save systems are perfectly complemented by I-See, a system based on a high-precision topographic map. It uses information about the road ahead to make the best use of the truck’s kinetic energy when driving in hilly terrain. The system’s task is to select gears, accelerate when necessary, and use engine braking when I-Cruise is activated.

Volvo emphasizes safe and comfortable truck driving through its Dynamic Steering system. This system provides stability and control functions to minimize driver stress during work, preventing skidding and lane departure. The Dynamic Steering system, which consists of a standard hydraulic power steering and an electric motor mounted on the steering mechanism, works by continuously processing data from several sensors on the road. It determines where the truck is going and what the driver intends to do. Engine control signals are sent 2,000 times per second to adjust unwanted steering movements and, when necessary, provide additional torque. If the vehicle begins to skid, the system ensures smoother steering, and as the truck approaches lane markings, it helps steer the vehicle back to the center of the lane.

The best customer is a satisfied customer. Guided by this principle, Volvo is ready to offer a wide range of additional services – from maintenance and repair to fleet management and driver development courses. Volvo aims to ensure that trucks are always ready for work. This is taken care of by over 2,000 sales representatives and service centers in 130 countries. Don’t forget the roadside assistance option – available 24/7 in 16 languages. Additionally, with Volvo’s advanced telematics and diagnostic tools, the condition of the trucks can be monitored remotely, allowing for the scheduling of visits to repair shops and ensuring optimal and timely maintenance.

Volvo also offers digital fleet management service packages. With Dynafleet and Volvo Connect, it’s easy to know the exact location and operational readiness of the trucks. These programs integrate features that allow monitoring and analyzing fuel consumption, emissions, driving efficiency, speed, and other data. Additionally, Volvo Connect and Dynafleet services can be integrated into existing IT infrastructure. This means that by using fleet vehicle data, other third-party applications, from planning to payroll, can be improved, ensuring even more efficient management levels.

Companies that include Volvo FH trucks in their fleet will certainly not be disappointed. In addition to the well-earned reputation as a reliable, stable, and safe player in the market, Volvo offers a range of support systems that enable more efficient, safer, and more economical driving, as well as an additional service package that helps simplify vehicle maintenance and fleet management.
